Works-in-Progress Wednesday (02/10/16)

What are you working on this week? The most exciting thing about my week is having a couple of friends come and stay with us; they are old friends of ours from Gainesville who moved away to Chicago about eight years ago, and they're getting ready to move back - so they're staying with us for a few days as they look at houses in our area (let's just get straight to the good stuff -- they're moving to our city and put an offer on a house! I'm so excited for them!). Meanwhile, I am getting a little work done this week as well...

In ceramics, when I have a few minutes here and there, I'm working on a prototype for a one-pound butter dish. Not that the butter dish will weigh one pound, but that it'll hold a one-pound stick of butter. Ever since I started offering the butter dishes, I've had people ask me if I make them for one-pound sticks (which I have to admit I didn't know was a thing!) and I'm finally getting around to making one. Hopefully the dimensions are right... I asked online since I can't find any one-pound sticks (I looked at three different grocery stores) and it turns out they're not what I thought (the size of four 1/4 lb sticks together in a box) so... we'll see how the clay shrinks and stuff, and see what the final dimensions are. I may need to tweak it a bit before they're final.

I'm also enjoying the response to my baby head mugs! I'm getting ready to make a second batch of them... well, I'm thinking about it, but I don't have them on the schedule until later in February, because I have yarn club and A Year of Soap installments to get out the door in the next ten days, first!

Speaking of yarn and yarn club, I'm still winding February's yarn (yes, still... I'll wind three or four skeins but then get pulled in another direction...) and the yarn I ordered for March club has finally come in, so I'm dyeing March yarn as well.

In soap, I just had a major soap restock, and I'm getting things together for the next installment of A Year of Soap, and I'm getting ready to release the new Earthy guest soap set (I'll have that up Friday).

Let's see.. is that it? Oh! Cetty and the raku kiln! Raku is just about Cetty's favorite, when it comes to ceramics. She's been itching to build a small pit kiln since she got here, and things have finally come together thanks to a mix of concrete blocks, fire brick, and regular brick. We've tried it a couple of times, built exactly like the instructions we found online, and then with feedback from That Poor Man who's been reading kiln design and building books, and from his dad (Cetty's brother) who was a fireman and an arson investigator (and thus knows his fire) .... we just about have it down. Which is going to open up a whole new realm of ceramic fun!

OK, that's it for me now. What about y'all? What are you working on this week?
